An innovative solution to the housing crisis
Collective Ownership fundamentally changes housing in the UK, bridging the gap between private renting, home ownership and social housing.
- Homes democratically controlled by residents
- Not for profit
- Rent levels independent of the market
- Financially resilient and scalable with high social impact
- Compatible with new build and existing homes
How it works >
This new housing tenure is delivered through a high impact investment vehicle: The Collective Ownership Society. The Society raises funds to acquire properties in bulk. These properties are then leased to groups of residents organised as housing co-operatives. As member co-ops, residents have direct control over their homes and a say in how the Society is run.
We use the lease rent to purchase further properties, ensuring more and more people benefit from secure, democratically controlled homes.
The Society is managed by a professional Board with representatives from resident groups, experts, investors and other key partners.

Fair, resident-controlled rental homes
Collective Ownership focuses on stability and resident control to combat the insecurity and disempowerment faced by private renters.
Stable housing is the foundation upon which we all build our lives, allowing us to put down roots, plan, experiment, and grow.
Collective Ownership avoids the culture of dependency found in the landlord-tenant relationship. Residents are free to control what they do with their homes, and benefit from:
- Stable rents, with affordability increasing over time.
- Rights similar to home ownership in terms of security, choice of property, and day-to-day control.
- Democratic management with power and responsibilities over maintenance, housing new residents, and how rents are paid.
- An incentive to improve the sustainability and quality of homes.
- The ability to invest savings ethically with a fair return.

Impactful investment in the future of housing
The Collective Ownership Society is a high impact, scalable and efficient investment vehicle to meet the broad demand for secure high-quality housing.
We use investment to acquire properties, acting as an enabler for groups of residents. Flexible investment in tangible assets allows us to develop a property portfolio, which provides security to leverage more finance. The impact of investment goes beyond funding one-off purchases, as surplus from lease payments is reused to continuously grow the number of homes in Collective Ownership.
Investment terms are flexible and open to organisations, individuals and residents.
